TECHNOL. [En parlant d'une partie d'un mécanisme, d'un appareil] Qui a un axe commun avec une autre pièce. La symétrie de sphères concentriques ou de cylindres coaxiaux (H. POINCARÉ, Leçons sur les hyp. cosmogoniques, 1911, p. 104). Une cathode cylindrique et une anode coaxiale (Hist. gén. des sc., t. 3, vol. 2, 1964, p. 279). Hélices coaxiales (Lar. Lang. fr.).
Spéc., TÉLÉCOMM. Câble coaxial. Câble formé de deux conducteurs concentriques séparés par un isolant. Actuellement, ce sont les câbles coaxiaux qui sont universellement adoptés (L'Admin. des Postes et Télécomm., 1964, p. 31).
P. ext., GÉOGR., ÉCON. L'expansion co-axiale aide aux dessertes, mais sépare souvent les habitants des deux rives (G. BELORGEY, Le Gouvernement et l'admin. de la France, 1967, p. 360).
